What’s Your Career Superpower?

Even if you’re not a fan of superhero movies, games, and comics, you probably know that every superhero, by definition, has a superpower: something special they can do or some singular attribute they have that makes them unique in a powerful way. How can you use the same idea to make yourself standout from other job candidates?

Stand Out From the Competition

You probably don’t have that kind of superpower, but you very likely possess one or more “career superpowers,” by which I mean notable elements that differentiate you in a positive way from others who might have similar job titles and scope of responsibilities.

There’s an enormous of amount of competition among job candidates, and because you get a very limited amount of time to make an impression on recruiters and hiring managers, it’s crucial that you can articulate your superpower concisely in your resume, in your LinkedIn profile, in your elevator pitch about yourself, and in interviews.

This is a key career strategy, no matter whether you are a C-level executive preparing a board resume, or a high-school student interviewing for your first job at the local ice cream parlor.

Figuring Out Your Superpowers

Here’s a good way to get yourself thinking about your superpower(s). Fill in these two sentences:

“I’m an expert in ___________.”

“My greatest asset is my talent for ____________.”

You Also Need Supporting Examples

Be creative. If you’re stuck, ask colleagues or friends what they notice most about you and your work. Then think of as many specific supporting examples as you can that back up your answers to these fill-in-the-blanks. Use all of this to establish and articulate a consistent career theme that will help differentiate you from other candidates.
