Last week, I (virtually) attended the annual conference of the National Resume Writers’ Association, which featured sessions on the latest trends in job searching, hiring, and technology.
I’m very pleased and honored to report that I won the NRWA’s 2021 ROAR Award for best resume in the Executive category. What a thrill!
What is the National Resume Writers’ Association?
The National Resume Writers’ Association is the only nonprofit trade association for professional resume writers. Their goals include increasing the visibility of the industry, encouraging ethical practices, promoting excellence in the craft, and raising industry standards through peer marketing and training.
There are hundreds of members spread across the U.S. and other countries, including the vast majority of the top resume writers in the field. In addition to the efforts described above, the NRWA also certifies top resume writers with two important credentials: the NCRW (Nationally Certified Resume Writer) and the NCOPE (Nationally Certified Online Profile Expert). I have earned both of these certifications.
What are the ROAR awards?
Every year, the NRWA welcomes submissions for its annual ROAR Awards (Recognizing Outstanding Achievement in Resumes) in numerous categories: New Grad/Entry Level, Tradesperson, Professional, Middle Manager, Executive, Military Transition, and Return to Work After a 3+ Year Break. Resume writers can submit real examples of what they consider to be their strongest work (anonymized and fictionalized to protect client confidentiality, and accompanied by a statement of strategy for how the writer approached the project). The awards are judged by a panel of very senior and experienced expert members within the NRWA.
Judging criteria include:
- Candidate positioning, resume strategy, and creativity
- Layout, design/format, and readability for both human and computer/ATS readers
- Keyword optimization for the target
- Technical writing accuracy and grammar
- Value/sales focus with specific accomplishments
The Executive category tends to be extremely competitive, as many of the NRWA’s members are very accomplished executive resume writers. So I was very excited to hear that my entry had been selected as the winner this year.
My Winning Entry
I won the category with a resume I created this year for a Chief Marketing Officer within the technology industry. My clients’ confidentiality is supremely important to me, so I prefer not to post resume samples on my website, but if you’d like to see my winning entry yourself, just email me at firstname.lastname@example.org and I’ll be happy to send it to you.
